The Valais animation filmmaker Claude Barras has been nominated for a European Film Award in the animated film category with his film "Sauvages". In addition to the film, four other works are up for election in the category. This was announced by the European Film Academy on Wednesday.
"Sauvages" is an ecological fable set in the rainforest of the South East Asian island of Borneo. The Swiss-Belgian-French co-production by Geneva-based studio Nadasdy Film celebrated its world premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival and screened at the Annecy Film Festival in the feature film section; it received the Kids Award in Locarno.
Barras has already received several awards for his predecessor "Ma vie de Courgette" (2016), including two Césars; the film was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Film in 2017.
In the race for a European Film Award, "Sauvages" is now up against "Flow" by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis, "Living Large" by Czech filmmaker Kristina Dufková, "Sultana's Dream" by Isabel Herguera from Spain and "They Shot The Piano Player" by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, both also from Spain.
These films nominated in the Animated Film category are also eligible for the European Film category, the European Film Academy writes in its press release.
The European Film Awards will be presented in Switzerland for the first time ever this year, on December 7 in Lucerne. The European Film Academy plans to announce all nominations in the various categories by November 5.
The European Film Awards have been presented by the European Film Academy, based in Berlin, since 1988. The event takes place there every two years. In other years, it is the turn of other cities throughout Europe.
