In Sunday's local elections in Valais, the SVP won seats on the executive in two more towns. It now sits in the government of Sierre and Martigny. Overall, the balance of power in the municipal councils remained stable.
With two candidates in Sierre and Martigny, the SVP is now also represented in the towns of the canton. In Monthey, the previous SVP candidate for the new legislative period ran on the Monthey Demain list, a movement that defines itself "without political labels or membership".
In Martigny, a stronghold of the FDP, the party remains the majority party with 5 out of 9 seats. The SVP's gain came at the expense of the center. In Sierre, on the other hand, the SVP and the centrist party each snatched one seat from the FDP.
The FDP also remains the party with the most seats in Monthey. It improved by one (4 out of 9) by snatching a seat from the center, whose incumbents were no longer running.
There were no changes in the distribution of political power in Sion, nor in the Upper Valais towns of Brig and Visp. On the left, the SP was able to hold on in all towns, and the Greens retained their seats in Sierre and Sion.
