The number of new asylum applications in September was around 40 percent lower than in September 2023 at 2363 applications. Compared to the previous month of August, however, they increased by almost 7 percent. The State Secretariat for Migration registered a total of 20,962 asylum applications in the first nine months of this year.

A comparison with the first nine months of 2023 and 2024 also showed a decline in asylum applications, as the State Secretariat announced on Tuesday. Afghanistan was also the most important country of origin in September with 604 applications. Compared to September 2023, however, the number of applications from Afghan nationals fell by over 59 percent.

Other important countries of origin were Turkey with 392 applications, Eritrea with 197 applications and Algeria with 191 applications. Of the 2363 new applications registered in September, 295 were secondary applications. These are, for example, births, family reunifications or multiple applications. In 2068 cases, these were primary applications.

In September, the SEM was able to decide on 2747 asylum applications in the first instance. Around a third of these were approved. 872 persons without a right of residence left Switzerland independently, 328 were returned to their country of origin, the responsible Dublin country or a third country.
