The German Bundestag has approved the government's so-called security package. This was announced by Bundestag Vice President Petra Pau (Left Party) after the last of several roll-call votes on the package in Berlin.
It provides for stricter residence and weapons laws as well as more powers for the security authorities. The "traffic light" coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP had launched the plan following the suspected Islamist-motivated attack in Solingen, which left three people dead. Its details were controversial until the very end.
