The transport companies SBB, Thurbo and RegionAlps presented the future regional trains in Weinfelden on Thursday. The investment by rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler Rail amounts to 2 billion Swiss francs.

A first train has now been completed for each of the three railroad companies, the transport companies wrote in a joint press release on Thursday. The new single-decker multiple-unit trains will be in regular service from 2026 and will gradually replace older regional train types by 2035. They are approved for use in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and France.

SBB, Thurbo and RegionAlps have ordered a total of 286 trains, the press release continued. There is also an option for a further 224 vehicles for the expansion of rail connections. Of the options, 10 vehicles have already been ordered for the Hochrhein-Bodensee-Express and 33 vehicles for the tri-national Basel S-Bahn.

According to the press release, the new trains offer passengers numerous improvements. These include more storage space for bicycles, baby carriages and luggage as well as good mobile phone and data reception and power sockets in all compartments.

The trains now also have two seats for wheelchair users in 1st class and a wheelchair-accessible WC. Thanks to better motorization, the new trains will help to improve punctuality. In addition, the environmentally friendly refrigerant propane (R290) will be used in the air conditioning units.
