On Monday morning, there were massive differences in temperature over a small area in Switzerland. Some of them were more than 20 degrees, as MeteoSwiss announced.
"On a journey from Grenchen via the Jura to Delsberg, you start in a cold lake of air at minus five degrees and end in a foehn south-westerly wind at plus 17 degrees," wrote MeteoSwiss on the short message service X. As the crow flies, the distance between the two towns is less than 20 kilometers.
In the Föhn valleys with strong Föhn winds, up to 18 degrees were expected on Monday, in the lowlands between nine and 13 degrees in the afternoon. At an altitude of 2000 meters, MeteoSwiss forecast a temperature of around nine degrees.
However, sub-zero temperatures and snow were expected again on Monday evening at altitudes above 2,200 meters. By Tuesday morning, five to 15 centimetres of fresh snow were expected on the northern slopes of the Alps and up to 20 centimetres in places towards the west.
