Fourteen cantons want to support illegally adopted persons in their search for their origins. They have decided to create a joint platform that will enable a regular exchange between the cantons on this topic.

The ad hoc structure agreed at a strategy meeting in Bern on Friday will also be open to other cantons. This was announced by the Conference of Cantonal Directors of Social Affairs (SODK) on the same day. According to the press release, the platform is both administratively and politically oriented.

According to the SODK, it could draw up joint declarations that would not be legally binding, but would provide a guideline for activities in the cantons.

The SODK wrote in its communiqué that the failures of the authorities in the past have shaped the lives of the people adopted at the time to this day. Various obstacles stand in the way of those affected in their search for their roots. The cantons are looking for solutions to provide them with better support.

According to the press release, Swiss Justice Minister Beat Jans welcomes the coordination process between the cantons and the creation of the platform. In future, the platform will also be available to the federal government as a direct point of contact.

In the 1970s to 1990s, numerous adoptions in Sri Lanka and other countries were tainted by irregularities. Various cantons met in February to discuss the organization of the search for the origin of these persons. According to the SODK, this search is the responsibility of the cantons.
