She lives and works alternately in Cape Town, Dakar and Basel - and will be coming to Venice in just under two years' time. Koyo Kouoh is to curate the art biennale there.

Cameroonian-born artist Koyo Kouoh is to curate the 61st edition of the Venice Art Biennale in 2026. This was decided by the board in the northern Italian lagoon city on the recommendation of President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco. Kouoh is currently Director of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Mocaa) in the metropolis of Cape Town in South Africa.

Previously, she was director of the Raw Material Company, a center for art, knowledge and society in Dakar, Senegal, which she also founded. She was also part of the curatorial teams of documenta 12 (2007) and documenta 13 (2012). During her time at Mocaa, her curatorial work focused on solo exhibitions of African and African-born artists.

"With her (Kouoh) here in Venice, the Biennale confirms what it has been offering the world for over a century: to be the home of the future," explained Biennale Director Buttafuoco. Kouoh described her appointment as a "unique honor and privilege". She hopes to design an exhibition that has "meaning for the world". Kouoh lives in Cape Town, Dakar and Basel.
