French director Jacques Audiard won two European Film Awards at the European Film Awards ceremony in Lucerne this evening: for Best Director and Best Screenplay for his film "Emilia Pérez".

The film, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival last May, tells the story of a well-known Mexican drug dealer who, with the help of a lawyer, undergoes a sex change to Emilia Pérez in order to go into hiding.

Shortly beforehand, French actress Juliette Binoche, President of the European Film Academy, had opened the 37th European Film Awards ceremony in Lucerne by recalling a Europe in which peace is under threat.

Unsurprisingly, the film "No Other Land" by the Palestinian film collective Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, Basel Adra and Hamdan Ballal won the prize for best documentary film.
