A research team led by the University of Bern has uncovered one of the oldest and most important burial mounds in Siberia. As the University of Bern announced on Tuesday, this research was recognized as one of the ten most important archaeological discoveries of the year.
The research team led by Gino Caspari from the University of Bern has excavated a so-called Scythian burial mound in Siberia and discovered scattered human bones and dozens of horses, which were probably sacrificed in honor of a high-ranking person.
According to the university, these findings, which were presented to experts in October, provide evidence of a burial tradition that points to an extreme power imbalance. This was once considered impossible in the peripheral zone of the steppes.
The specialist journal "Archaeology Magazine" has now listed the discovery in Bern as one of the "Top 10 Archaeological Discovery 2024". According to Caspari, the research took place under difficult circumstances. According to the researcher, the excavations in a swamp in Siberia were only possible with hard physical work, which was made more difficult by freezing temperatures, snowstorms, floods and swarms of mosquitoes.
