In order to cope with the higher volume of passengers, SBB will be running more trains over the Christmas holidays - both on the main routes and to popular leisure and vacation destinations. Extra trains are also planned to extend the regular trains.
As there are fewer commuters during the holidays, there will be no peak-time additional trains between Lucerne and Zurich and between Berne and Zurich during this period, as SBB informed the Keystone-SDA news agency in response to an inquiry. This means that more rolling stock will be available for leisure travel.
The Verbier Express and the VosAlpes Express also run as seasonal extra trains at weekends and on public holidays from December 15 to April 27. These trains take passengers to the winter sports resorts and back.
The Federal Roads Office (Astra) in turn warns of "considerable traffic restrictions and increased congestion" over the Christmas period and the turn of the year, as stated in a press release on Wednesday. The Astra expects a lot of traffic, especially on the highways in the Swiss Plateau and the agglomerations.
