The Swiss Federal Council has proposed a revision of the law on the electronic patient dossier (EPD) to be put out for consultation until October 19th. The proposed law would require all healthcare professionals to keep electronic patient records and open a free electronic dossier for all people in Switzerland. Hospitals, maternity wards and nursing homes are already required to keep electronic patient records, and this requirement would now extend to all service providers, including doctors' offices and pharmacies. The cantons would be responsible for ensuring that this is done. The EPD would be free for all those insured in Switzerland, and an opt-out model would be available for those who do not wish to have an electronic dossier.
