At the official opening of the Locarno Film Festival on Wednesday evening, Swiss Federal Councillor Alain Berset jokingly gave a closing speech instead of an opening speech. For the long-time president Marco Solari, this 76th edition is the last under his leadership. Berset praised the film selection of the artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, noting that it came from all continents and that the "Cuvée 2023" was extraordinary. He was both sad and happy, Berset continued, sad that the world had lost great filmmakers such as Luc Godard and Alain Tanner this year, and happy that cinema had resumed after the pandemic. This was the last time that the 51-year-old minister opened the Locarno Film Festival. Berset has been a federal councillor since 2012. For 78-year-old president Marco Solari, this is also his last film festival. The energetic Solari has been president of Switzerland's most prestigious film festival since 2000.nnnn
