In Switzerland, full-time employees were absent due to illness or accident an average of 9.3 days in the past year - almost two weeks - which was a new record. Between 2010 and 2019, the number of annual absences ranged from 6.2 to 7.2 days, according to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (BFS). Compared to the pre-pandemic period, the increase was 34%, and in the pandemic years 2020 (8.1 absence days) and 2021 (7.5) significantly fewer absences were recorded. The increase in absences was seen across all industries, with young people and women being the most absent. The BFS did not investigate the reasons for the increase in absences, but insurance companies assume that the attitude towards being sick has changed with the Covid-19 pandemic.nnnn
