Security gaps discovered in charging stations for electric vehicles

There are significant security gaps in the Swiss charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The National Cybersecurity Test Institute (NTC) has uncovered these at around 30 operators and manufacturers. The security gaps have now been rectified.

The infrastructure and charging stations for electromobility are growing rapidly, but the start-up companies that are driving them forward do not always invest sufficiently in security, preferring a quick market launch. This exposes the network to security risks, as the NTC announced on Wednesday.

Between May and August of this year, the institute tested the systems of around 50 different manufacturers that are accessible via the internet, as well as the operating systems of eleven charging stations and the back-end applications of 23 charging station operators. The result: the public charging infrastructure in Switzerland needs to be improved, writes the NTC.

One of the biggest risks is the use of an outdated and unreliable version of the OCPP communication protocol, which is widely used in the industry. Manufacturers should only use the latest and more secure version of the protocol, recommends the NTC.

The Cybersecurity Test Institute has contacted the companies concerned: “No manufacturer or infrastructure operator has reported any damage to us in connection with the vulnerabilities found,” Tobias Castagna, head of the test team, told the Keystone-SDA news agency.

The NTC is a non-profit institute financed by the public sector.
