Ticino witnesses a worrying spike in attempted homicides, nearly doubling last year, with a notable murder in Aurigeno.
In Ticino, the number of cases of attempted homicide almost doubled last year compared to the previous year. The recorded cases also include numerous disputes in which weapons and/or physical violence were used.
According to a joint press release from the police commissariats of Lugano, Locarno, Bellinzona and Mendrisio, there were 20 attempted homicides in 2023, compared to eleven in the previous year.
In addition to the attempted murders, there was also a murder in 2023.
According to the press release, this was one of the “most serious incidents of the past year” and took place in Aurigeno in the Maggia Valley in May. A 42-year-old man fired three shots at a 41-year-old school employee at the elementary school. The victim succumbed to his injuries.
Unlike attempted murders, the number of robberies has fallen compared to the previous year, the press release continues. There were 34 such crimes in 2023, compared to 39 in the previous year. However, robberies on the street have increased.
