When buying lipsticks or lip balms, caution is advised.
A recent investigation of 29 lip care products in Basel-Stadt and Aargau revealed that 20 of them had deficiencies.
The authorities issued a sales ban for four of the products, which contained prohibited substances, according to the Canton Laboratory of Basel-Stadt.
The 29 products, mostly from China and Europe, included lip balm, lip gloss and lipstick, and were tested for mineral paraffin and aromatic mineral oil components, allergenic fragrances and prohibited substances. Ten samples did not meet the recommendations of Cosmetics Europe and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in terms of mineral paraffin content. Eleven samples also had at least one allergenic fragrance that was not declared. Five samples had a false declaration of colorants, and two samples had preservatives that were not indicated.
The Canton Laboratory concluded that the results of the control generally indicate a lack of quality control by the manufacturers concerned. The investigation was also participated in by the Aargau Canton Office for Consumer Protection.
