Former SVP Federal Councillor Christoph Blocher has defended the Young SVP. The parent party did not have to intervene because of an alleged meeting between the Young Party’s head of strategy and the Austrian right-wing extremist Martin Sellner.

You can talk to anyone, but you shouldn’t simply ally yourself with foreign movements, said Christoph Blocher in the pre-released “Samstagsrundschau” on SRF radio and in an interview with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” on Saturday.

In the background of all this are calls for the resignation of Basel-based politician Sarah Regez, the JSVP’s head of strategy. Which were also voiced from within the party’s own ranks last week. According to “SonntagsBlick” on March 31, Regez took part in a secret meeting with Sellner, which was also attended by members of the far-right group “Junge Tat”.

The parent party does not need to intervene in the matter, said Blocher: “You have to let the young people do it. And that is where the discussion is taking place. Specifically, six cantonal sections of the Young SVP distanced themselves from extremist positions on Wednesday. In a press release, they demanded that the leadership of the young SVP party clearly distance itself from right-wing extremists.

However, Nils Fiechter, President of the Young SVP and Regez’s relationship partner, told Swiss Radio SRF last week that Regez resigning from office was “definitely out of the question”.
