Data protection advocate Ueli Buri voices significant concerns about the proposed inter-cantonal police data exchange.
Data protection advocate Ueli Buri has criticized the inter-cantonal exchange of information demanded by the police. The demand is a “blank cheque” for the police corps, said the President of the Conference of Swiss Data Protection Commissioners (Privatim).
The police are not the guarantors of the balance between security and privacy, Buri said in an interview with the “Berner Zeitung” published on Monday.
It is up to politicians to decide on this balance. “After all, the tax authorities do not determine the level of tax rates,” said the Privatim President.
He also criticised the fact that police forces were collecting data in advance and without suspicion. In contrast to profiles on social media, the population has no choice when it comes to state data collection.
However, the right to informational self-determination is guaranteed by the constitution, said Buri.
The Conference of Cantonal Police Commanders (KKPKS) had called for a national database to combat serial crime.
According to the KKPKS, the lack of data exchange between the cantonal and communal police forces makes it difficult to identify serial crimes in good time.
