Council of States Political Rosmarie Simmen Has Passed

Rosmarie Simmen, the first female member of the Council of States in Solothurn, has died at the age of 86.

The CVP politician was a member of the Council of States from 1987 to 1999. Simmen was also President of the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia and the Federal Commission for Foreigners.

The graduate pharmacist died last Monday, as family members announced on Thursday. Simmen, who grew up in Zurich, began her political career as a member of the Constitutional Council of the canton of Solothurn.

She was a member of the cantonal parliament from 1983.

Simmen won the SP’s seat in the Council of States in the second round of voting in 1987. The then 49-year-old was the fifth woman and the second CVP representative to enter the newly elected Council of States.
