The Swiss Army is participating in the fight against the forest fire in the Oberwallis region. The Swiss Department of Defense, Protection of the Population and Sport (VBS) announced on Tuesday that large Super Puma helicopters are ready for use. They are being deployed in the fire area of Bitsch and Ried-Mörel near Brig, according to the tweet. In a second tweet, the VBS stated that a Super Puma is already in use and further support measures are being planned with the local crisis team. According to the Swiss Army website, they have 15 of these transport helicopters, which can carry two pilots and eighteen soldiers, or transport material and water containers. Since Monday evening, an Army Super Puma has been in the Oberwallis region, according to the Wallis helicopter company Air Zermatt. However, due to the difficult conditions at night, it was not used in the dark.
