Starke Winde bringen Schweizer Züge zum Entgleisen

Mo, Apr 3rd 2023

Fifteen people were injured over the weekend when two Swiss trains derailed during a storm. They were the 4th and 5th derailments in Switzerland in the last 130 years.
The two trains derailed almost simultaneously when Storm Mathis hit Switzerland (Keystone SDA).

With high wind warnings in effect over the weekend, two regional trains derailed almost concurrently in two separate locations in the canton of Bern leaving 15 people injured, according to local police.

A Rare Occurence

An RBS company train headed to Büren zum Hof station with 54 after-work commuters derailed and overturned around 5pm on Friday during a high-speed windstorm. Twelve of the passengers were injured with one seriously so, according to police.

Trains nearby were forced to stop while rescue workers dug through the overturned train and aided the passengers.

At nearly the same time 24 miles away, an Aare Seeland Mobil train headed to Lüscherz derailed with 15 passengers aboard. The rear carriage derailed, causing nearby cars to overturn, as well. Three of the passengers, including the driver, were injured in that derailment. The incidents were the fourth and fifth Swiss train derailments in the last 130 years.

The tracks had to be closed due to poor weather conditions as 122-kilometer-per-hour winds swept through the area, according to the Swiss Federal Railways.

The storm, dubbed Storm Mathis, first originated in the U.K. before wreaking havoc on western and central Europe. Mathis caused downed trees and closed roadways over the weekend.
