The nationwide warning strike by the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) at Deutsche Bahn and other railroad companies has been underway since late Thursday evening. Its effects were particularly noticeable at the start of operations early on Friday morning.

"The GDL strike is causing massive disruption to all long-distance and regional services," announced Deutsche Bahn this morning. "The emergency timetable for DB passenger services has started."

A Deutsche Bahn spokeswoman said on Friday that around one in five long-distance trains was running as announced.

SBB advised against traveling to Germany until Friday evening. Tickets would remain valid. The canceled cross-border trains will be replaced within Switzerland, an SBB spokesperson told Keystone-SDA.

Different effects depending on the region

According to the spokeswoman, the effects on German regional transport vary greatly. "Many passengers have been able to bring forward their journey or postpone it to a later date," she said. The stations were largely empty in the early morning. "This strike was announced at extremely short notice, but we were still able to set up our emergency timetable in good time."

In Bavaria in particular, where the railroad is still dealing with the effects of the snow chaos, hardly any trains are likely to be on the move. In other regions, the offer will be greater, the railroad announced.

This is the second warning strike by the train drivers' union GDL in the current collective bargaining round at Deutsche Bahn. It is scheduled to last until Friday evening at 22:00. It started a little earlier on Thursday for freight traffic. Deutsche Bahn fears a backlog of around 300 freight trains.
