A 61-year-old ski tourer was caught in a snow cornice on Monday afternoon while climbing Piz Platta in Mulegns GR and fell to his death. The snow swept him over a rock face and he fell about 250 meters.

The Swiss man who died in the accident was part of a group of four and was the first to ascend towards Piz Platta. As the Graubünden cantonal police announced on Tuesday, the snow cornice came loose at an altitude of around 3,250 meters above sea level.

A companion alerted the air rescue service. Their team was only able to recover the alpinist dead. The cantonal police began an investigation.
