Over 70 organizations have signed a memorandum of understanding with targets for a collection and recycling system for plastic packaging and beverage cartons.

According to a statement by the Swiss Recycling umbrella organization on Wednesday, the declaration was signed by stakeholders along the entire value chain: from producers to recyclers and waste disposal companies. Among the signatories are Tetra Pak, Emmi, Nestlé, Coop and Migros.

In the previous year, market players set themselves the goal of closing cycles for plastic packaging and beverage cartons. With the declaration of intent, principles for the system have now been defined. However, there is currently no concrete start date.

In the future, a collection bag will be offered throughout Switzerland. The collection system is to be financed through bag contributions, contributions from distributors and proceeds from the recyclates. The bag price for consumers is currently still open, said Swiss Recycling when asked by the AWP news agency.

By 2030, the market players are aiming for a recycling rate of 55 percent for plastic and even 70 percent for beverage cartons. This corresponds to the objectives of the EU.
