On Thursday, a freight train derailed in the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, causing a major accident. Rudolf Büchi, Deputy Head of Infrastructure at the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), spoke at a media conference in Bellinzona TI on Friday about the incident. He said that such an accident is expected to occur only once every 100 years. The accident happened at around 8:30 pm on Thursday in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world's longest railway tunnel. The freight train, which was carrying goods from Germany to Italy, derailed and caused a fire. The fire was extinguished by the fire brigade, but the accident caused significant damage to the tunnel. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but it is believed to be due to a technical fault. The SBB has set up a task force to investigate the incident and to determine the cause.
