Robert Mardini, the current General Director of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), will be stepping down from his position in March 2021. This was confirmed by the ICRC in response to a report by the Swiss newspaper Le Temps. Mardini has been leading the ICRC through a difficult period, marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, the intensification of conflicts around the world, and budget deficits. The process to appoint a new General Director will begin in the coming weeks. The ICRC is facing significant financial difficulties and has had to cut its budget for this year by almost 450 million Swiss francs. This has resulted in the organisation announcing that it will be forced to lay off at least 1800 of its more than 20,000 employees and cut a further 3000 positions. Several delegations will also be dissolved. In response to the difficult situation, the Swiss government has offered a support package of 50 million francs and a deferral of the repayment of a loan to the ICRC.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
