The Swiss National Council has voted to expand the A1 motorway between Bern and Zurich, and Lausanne and Geneva, to six lanes. The motion was proposed by National Council member Erich Hess (SVP/BE) and was accepted by 94 votes to 87, with 4 abstentions. The motion was based on the fact that the 410 kilometer long A1 is now much busier than it used to be, and some sections have already been expanded to six lanes. The next step is for the Council of States to decide on the motion. The motion was supported by the Federal Council, who argued that the expansion was necessary to reduce traffic congestion on the A1, which is currently one of the most congested roads in the country. Opponents of the motion, including representatives from the Green Party, the GLP and the SP, argued that the expansion was incompatible with the country's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. They argued that cars, even when electrified, are still inefficient vehicles.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
