A new ETH study commissioned by Economiesuisse has concluded that the construction of a new nuclear power plant by 2040 and the extension of the lifespans of existing nuclear power plants would strengthen energy security. The Swiss Parliament is currently debating the Energy-Mantle Act, which aims to significantly increase the use of renewable energy sources by 2050. According to the study, extending the lifespans of existing nuclear power plants by 65 or 80 years would reduce the cost of the proposed increase in electricity production by 11 billion Swiss francs, three times the cost of the incentives approved by the Swiss people in the Climate Protection Act. The study also found that a solution involving a new nuclear power plant from 2040 would be more cost-effective than the reference scenario of the Mantle Act, reducing the cost of the energy system by 12 billion Swiss francs and closing the winter electricity gap. However, the study did not take into account the investment costs of the new nuclear power plant, which could lead to savings or additional costs. The study also found that relying solely on rooftop photovoltaics would not be enough to close the winter electricity gap, and that either longer-running or new nuclear power plants, or a large-scale expansion of solar and wind energy on alpine open spaces, would be necessary.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
