Councils Want to Facilitate Greenhouse Cultivation on Agricultural Land

The Swiss Parliament has passed a motion to make it easier to grow food in greenhouses. The motion proposed that for greenhouses on non-sealed crop rotation areas, the same area does not need to be compensated for. This is despite the fact that most of the soil remains intact. The motion was proposed by Nationalrat Heinz Siegenthaler (Mitte/BE) who argued that greenhouses of the latest technology can produce food efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way. The Umwelt-, Raumplanungs- und Energiekommission des Ständerats (Urek-S) initially opposed the motion, but it was eventually passed with 27 votes in favour and 10 against. The motion does not require compensation for all greenhouses, only those where the natural soil is not sealed and regularly cultivated. This is to ensure that the crop rotation areas are protected from any potential damage caused by the construction of greenhouses. The motion was also supported by Werner Salzmann (SVP/BE), President of the Vegetable Producers Association, who highlighted the demands of consumers for locally grown vegetables.
