In the southern canton of Switzerland, the focus of this election season is on the Council of States. After the election of the former incumbent Marina Carobbio to the cantonal government, the SP must defend her mandate. FDP and Mitte want to regain the seat they lost four years ago, when CVP Council of States member Filippo Lombardi was narrowly defeated by Marina Carobbio. Mitte-Partei is sending Fabio Regazzi, a National Council member since 2011, to try and reclaim the seat. Bruno Storni is running for the SP, while the Greens are sending National Council member Greta Gysin despite their list connection with the SP. Fabio Regazzi, National Council member and president of the Swiss Trade Association, is running for the FDP, while SVP President Marco Chiesa is running for re-election. After the 2019 federal elections, the FDP decided against a list connection with the SP, but is open to "thematic cooperation" with the Mitte-Partei. There are eleven candidates in total for the Council of States election, and a second round of voting is likely. It is likely that the conservative-leaning canton will send one SVP and one Mitte or FDP representative to the Council of States, while the left will lose its seat. Among the "new faces" running for the National Council are three female candidates: Alessandra Gianella and Natalia Ferrara for the FDP, and Laura Riget for the SP. In addition to the established parties, several new political movements are running, including "Più Donne", "Movement for the Ticino Valleys" and "No to EU and NATO". 256 people are running on 33 lists for a seat in the National Council. The most likely to succeed is "Avanti con Ticino & Lavoro", a movement led by former SP politician and economist Amalia Mirante which won three seats in the cantonal parliament in April.
