The number of illegal migrants and refugees entering Switzerland is increasing. According to the Swiss Federal Customs and Border Protection Agency (BAZG), 7120 illegal stays were recorded in September, more than in August and September of the previous year. Most of the illegal entries were citizens of Afghanistan, and many were apprehended in the canton of Ticino. The BAZG attributes the higher number of illegal entries in Ticino to a shift in migration routes within the Balkans, with refugees and migrants now primarily taking the route from Serbia through Bosnia, Croatia and Slovenia to Italy and then northwards. The BAZG plans to strengthen border protection in Ticino, and has confirmed that additional personnel from the German-speaking part of Switzerland will be relocated to the south.
