Students Drive Through Australia in a Self-Built Solar Car

A team of 40 students from ETH Zurich, named alpha-Centauri, have started the World Solar Challenge in Darwin, Australia. The race is a 3000 kilometer journey through the Australian Outback and the students are driving a self-built solar car called Aletsch. The conditions are extreme, with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees in the driver's cabin and strong side winds. The team plans to complete the race in five days, with the drivers being changed every three hours. The car is 188 kilograms and can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour. The team had to pass several safety tests before being allowed to participate in the race. Although they hope to make it to the podium, they are realistic and aim for the top 10. Previous Swiss teams have been successful in the race, with a team from Bern winning in 1990 and a team from the Berner Fachhochschule winning in 2007 in the category of vehicles with the lowest CO2 emissions.
