The National Council is Becoming More Male-Dominated

The results of the Swiss National Council elections on Sunday showed a decrease in the proportion of women elected to the Council. 77 women were elected, seven fewer than in the previous election in 2019. This means that the proportion of women in the Council is now 38.5%, down from 42% in 2019. The average age of the newly elected members is 49.5 years, with the oldest being 76-year-old Charles Poncet from Geneva and the youngest being 26-year-old Katja Riem from Bern. In the previous legislature, the average age of members was 51.7 years. This decrease in the proportion of women elected to the Council is likely due to the departure of some female members during the last legislature.
