The Polycom radio network, used by emergency services across Switzerland, is being upgraded to a new system. The 391st of 782 antennas was switched over on Monday, located in St. Gallen. The project was initiated in 2016, but has faced various problems and delays due to the high security requirements. The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The new system will provide more communication resources to cover the increasing number of cross-cantonal operations. Around 60,000 users are connected to the network, which is used daily by the Federal Customs Administration, police, fire brigade, ambulance, civil defence, national road maintenance, operators of critical infrastructure and the army in emergency operations.
