Gerhard Pfister, President of the Swiss People's Party, will open the next legislative session of the National Council on December 4th. This is because he is the longest-serving member of the National Council, having served since December 1st, 2003. His task is to appoint a provisional office of nine members to preside over the National Council until a new President or President-elect is elected, likely to be Eric Nussbaumer of the Social Democratic Party. The provisional office will not be responsible for planning the upcoming winter session, which will be the 52nd since the founding of the modern Swiss state. In contrast to the National Council, the Council of States does not have an age president, as its members are elected according to the rules of their cantons.
