In Switzerland, the summertime ended in the night from Saturday to Sunday. At 03.00 o'clock the clocks were set back to 02.00 o'clock. Thus, the night was one hour longer. Summertime will be valid again from March 31, 2024.
The Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) has announced that this is not a switch to "winter time". By the time change in the fall, Switzerland will return to standard time. Summer time will only be introduced when the clocks are set forward one hour in June, according to the Institute.
For over 125 years, Switzerland has been using Central European Time as its standard time. In 1981, the Swiss Federal Council introduced Daylight Saving Time, following the example of its European neighbours. Since 1996, all countries of the European Union (EU) and Switzerland have been synchronizing their clocks by setting them one hour forward on the last Sunday of March and one hour back on the last Sunday of October.
The recent push to abolish seasonal time changes has become a political topic of discussion in the EU in recent years. However, no decision has been made on the matter either at the EU level or in individual states. The main reason for this agreement is economic, as the potential implications of abolishing seasonal time changes are still unknown.
