At the "Antifascist Evening Walk" in Bern on Saturday, the police forces were attacked with stones and bottles. A police officer was injured in the head by a stone thrown at him.
The Bern Cantonal Police announced on Sunday, in response to a request from the Keystone-SDA news agency, that a police officer was involved in a traffic accident. The officer was wearing a helmet and did not require medical attention.
Hundreds of people joined the march through Bern, including activists from Basel and Zurich. Many participants were masked. Fireworks and firecrackers were set off, windows were broken, cars were damaged and walls were sprayed. The extent of the damage is not yet known.
Police officers in full gear shielded buildings such as the city theater and accompanied the procession in several patrol cars. According to their own statements, however, the police were not able to remove suspected offenders from the procession. The risk of numerous injuries was too great, said media spokesperson Lena Zurbuchen. This would have also endangered uninvolved people.
By "tightly flanking" the march in the evening, the police were able to prevent major property damage. Investigations into the committed crimes are now being initiated.
The Streets of Bern Taken
On Saturday evening, around 800 people took to the streets of Bern in a show of self-determination and resistance against the state, capital, and fascism, as part of the "Evening Walk" organized by the Antifa. The Bern Alliance Against Right-Wing Extremism issued a positive statement, praising the participants for their commitment to the cause.
Hundreds of people gathered in Bern, Switzerland, on Saturday to protest against the rising right-wing, far-right and fascist forces in the country and beyond. Despite a large police presence, the protesters were loud and determined in their message. The march ended peacefully at the Reitschule around 9pm.
In the past, there have been instances of violence, property damage, and skirmishes with the police during anti-fascist marches in Bern. Last year, over a thousand people participated in the march.
The Security Director is calling for measures to be taken.
Bern's Security Director Reto Nause has stated that the far-left extremist movement remains a major problem. He has called for more effective measures to monitor the violent groups, or else situations like the one on Saturday will continue to occur.
