Train services at Renens VD station returned to normal on Friday morning following the total disruption the previous day. The repair work on the damaged cables was completed during the night, as reported by SBB.

Following tests during the night from Thursday to Friday, SBB resumed services with the first trains in the morning according to the timetable, as the railroad company announced on Friday morning. Delays and changes to train compositions are still possible.

The breakdown was caused by drilling work during which eight large cables were damaged at Renens station. More than 500 connections linking 65 points and signals to the control systems were damaged. The cause of the drilling error is under investigation.

Vulnerable traffic axis

SBB initially announced a one-day interruption. However, direct services between Geneva and Lausanne n between Geneva and Lausanne were resumed on Thursday morning. Replacement buses ran on regional services. The interruption also caused delays in road traffic, especially around Lausanne.

The Geneva-Lausanne line is one of the busiest in Switzerland. It is also one of the most vulnerable because there are no alternative routes. A new nine-kilometre tunnel between Morges and Perroy should provide a remedy by 2040 at the latest.
