National Council committee clears the way for national exhibition

Planning for the next national exhibition remains on track. The National Council's Committee for Science, Education and Culture (WBK-N) supports a political initiative to this end.
The WBK-N approved the "National Exhibition" motion, it announced on Friday. The four current project initiatives Muntagna, NEXPO, Svizra27 and X27 welcomed this decision. The motion instructs the Federal Council to define the framework conditions for the next national exhibition from 2030 onwards.
In June 2022, the Federal Council and the Conference of Cantonal Governments (KdK) adopted a joint position regarding the next national exhibition. Both sides expressly welcome the staging of a future "Expo". The four project initiatives, Muntagna, NEXPO, Svizra27 and X27, once again fleshed out their concepts and made further preparations.
In March 2023, however, the Federal Council announced "to everyone's surprise" that it would not be looking into financing the next national exhibition until 2028 at the earliest. According to the press release, a project delay of several years would have meant that the preparatory work carried out to date on all project initiatives would have had to be frozen or thrown overboard. The financial damage would be almost incalculable.
Implementation from 2030
In July 2023, the Council of States' sister committee WBK-S therefore submitted a motion instructing the Federal Council to define the framework conditions for the next national exhibition from 2030 onwards.
The ongoing preparatory work should not be interrupted under any circumstances if years of work by the project organizations, cantons, cities, municipalities and businesses are not to be destroyed. The WBK-S already approved the motion in September.
If the motion finds a majority in the National Council in the next stage, preparations could begin in 2028 with the support of the federal government. It would be realistic to hold the next national exhibition from 2030. According to surveys, the population supports a new "Expo".
