Changing of the guard among the richest Swiss: after 21 years, the Ikea founding family Kamprad is no longer in first place.

This now belongs to Chanel co-owner Gérard Wertheimer, who lives in Geneva, according to the ranking published on Thursday evening by "Bilanz" magazine. His fortune is estimated at 41 to 42 billion francs. That is 3 billion more than last year. At that time, Wertheimer was still in second place.

Meanwhile, the Ikea heirs Peter, Jonas and Mathias Kamprad only have between 13 and 14 billion - down from over 50 billion in the previous year - putting them in tenth place in the ranking. The reason for this fall is a reassessment of the wealth situation of the sons of Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad. According to Bilanz, a large part of the family's assets are held in a foundation to which the family has no access.

Roche families lose billions

Overall, the wealth of the 300 richest Swiss people fell from CHF 821 billion to CHF 795 billion in 2023. This decline of just over 3 percent is the second in a row, after 13 consecutive years of growth.

The Oeri, Hoffmann and Duschmalé families, for example, lost a lot of ground: the assets of the Roche heirs shrank by 4 billion to 26 to 27 billion because the Roche pharmaceutical group lost value on the stock market. Nevertheless, the Roche families are still in second place in the ranking.

Klaus-Michael Kühne (24-25 billion) and the Bertarelli (16-17 billion) and Blocher (14-15 billion) families also made it into the top ten.

UBS Chairman new on the list

According to "Bilanz", 19 men and women have made it onto the list of the 300 richest. These include UBS Chairman Colm Kelleher (150-200 million) and Partners Group Chairman Steffen Meister (350-400 million).

According to the information, five of the new arrivals alone are wealthy Norwegians who have moved to tax-friendly Switzerland.

The balance sheet ranking has been in existence since 1989. Initially, the 100 richest were listed, but now the 300 richest are included. In 1989, the 100 richest people had assets of CHF 66 billion according to the balance sheet. Today, the two richest people alone have more wealth than the 100 richest people combined.
