The littering situation in Switzerland has eased further. Over 80 percent of those surveyed reported that there was very little littering, according to the Swiss Competence Center against Littering (IGSU) in its annual survey.

After a brief stagnation in the littering situation during the coronavirus years of 2020 and 2021, there was a slight improvement, as in the previous year, the IGSU announced on Tuesday. Less than a tenth of respondents thought that there was a lot of littering on site.

Overall, only a quarter of respondents felt disturbed by the general littering situation in Switzerland, according to the report. At the time of the first IGSU survey in 2015, this figure was still three quarters. As part of the study, 3568 people in Switzerland were surveyed.

According to the IGSU, there are several reasons for this decline: reporting on littering and recycling has increased significantly in recent years, schools are addressing the topic in lessons and events are also focusing more and more on preventing littering. There has also been an increase in the number of space sponsorship projects. There are now 60 of these awareness-raising projects being carried out by municipalities, cities and schools. This corresponds to ten more projects than in the previous year.
