Scholz calls for more speed in expanding renewable energies

At the World Climate Conference, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has called for a tripling of global renewable energy capacities by 2030. "The expansion of renewable energies is progressing, but not at the pace that is necessary," Scholz told journalists in Dubai on Saturday. Expansion had already been accelerated in Germany, but this now needed to happen all over the world.
At the end of his two-day participation in the World Climate Conference, Scholz wanted to outline Germany's position in the fight against climate change in a speech on Saturday. In addition to the expansion of renewable energies, it was important to him that the Climate Club of Ambitious States, which he had set up, had begun its work at the conference. The group comprises 35 countries and the European Union as a community of states. "It was a successful start," said Scholz. "The aim is to create the basis for making our joint efforts comparable."
Many other countries are interested in joining in, Scholz emphasized. However, countries such as China and India, which are among the largest producers of climate-damaging gases, are still missing.
He also takes part in events on cooperation with Africa in the transition to renewable energies and on taking stock eight years after the conclusion of the Paris Climate Agreement. In this agreement, the global community agreed to keep global warming well below two degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial age, and if possible to limit it to 1.5 degrees.
At midday, Scholz will return to Germany earlier than originally planned. Over the next few days in Berlin, he will continue to negotiate with his coalition partners, the FDP and the Greens, on how to close the budget gap of an estimated 17 billion euros next year. This has arisen as a result of a historic ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court on the budget practices of the coalition government.
