The Broye Canal has been accessible to boats again since Monday. Following the oil spill last Friday, the canal has been cleaned and restored, according to the Fribourg cantonal police. The risk of drinking water contamination has been ruled out.
Thanks to the rapid intervention of the fire department, the Office for the Environment and the Office for Forests and Nature, it was possible to prevent the pollution from spreading into Lake Neuchâtel, the police wrote on Monday. However, the floating barriers on the large canal and the Bibera Canal will remain in place for the next few days.
Thousands of liters of heating oil spilled into the Biberen canal on Friday due to carelessness when transferring the fuel on the premises of a company in Ried near Kerzers FR. According to a press release, the drainage channels on the premises of the company responsible were cleaned and contaminated soil was removed. At the same time, oil was collected by the fire department.
So far, no fish deaths have been detected, it added. However, gamekeepers had found three dead swans near the canal. These were forwarded to the Institute of Fish and Wildlife Health in Bern for analysis.
