The employees of the ground handling company Dnata at Geneva Airport will not go on strike on Saturday. However, the conflict within the company has not been resolved, as the public service union (VPOD) announced on Friday evening.

The talks between the airport service provider and the VPOD before the Geneva conciliation authority did not lead to an agreement, as VPOD union secretary Jamshid Pouranpir told the Keystone-SDA news agency late on Friday evening. A strike from Sunday morning has not been ruled out.

The ground handling company offered staff a 1.7 percent pay rise on Thursday, said Pouranpir. On Friday, the offer was increased to 3 percent. Around 94 percent of employees rejected the offer, according to an anonymous online survey conducted by VPOD. A good 87 percent of employees were prepared to go on strike.

Fears of losses in old age

The union is demanding a wage increase of 5 percent, Pouranpir continued. The union is also demanding the introduction of various bonuses linked to the severity of the work. With the support of the union, the employees would oppose a change in the contribution rates for occupational pensions. They feared a loss of income of up to 120,000 francs in old age.

Half of Dnata's employees voted in favor of announcing a strike on Monday, as the airport will be handling up to 60,000 passengers a day by the end of the year. Dnata employs around 600 people in Geneva. Among other things, they issue tickets and transport passengers and baggage on the ground. The company works for airlines including Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Iberia, Air Lingus and, in some cases, Easyjet.
