Swiss Post processed slightly fewer parcels in the run-up to Christmas than last year. Between "Black Friday" at the end of November and Christmas, 21.6 million parcels were delivered, around three percent fewer than in the previous year.

At the same time, the sorting facilities processed around 13 million letters, newspapers and direct mail items every day in the run-up to Christmas, as Swiss Post announced on Tuesday. Last year, the figure was around 14 million.

Swiss Post attributes the decline in parcel post to the gloomy consumer sentiment. Nevertheless, volumes were significantly higher than the average daily volumes for the rest of 2023. The annual record was also set in the run-up to Christmas: Around 1.2 million parcels were delivered by Swiss Post on December 18.

In order to cope with this capacity, Swiss Post hired around 500 additional temporary employees and rented 330 delivery vans during the Christmas period. The three new parcel centers opened this year in Pratteln BL, Wallisellen ZH and Härkingen SO have increased daily sorting capacity throughout Switzerland by around 20 percent compared to the previous year.
