Over the past New Year weekend, Rega was called out more than 220 times. This corresponds to an increase of 25 percent compared with the turn of the year 22/23. Almost half of all the missions over the past four days were in connection with winter sports accidents.
The increased number of missions was particularly noticeable in the ski regions, especially in the Bernese Oberland and the canton of Graubünden, as Swiss Air-Rescue (Rega) reported on Tuesday. An additional rescue helicopter was deployed in both regions. Each helicopter flew around 30 missions.
The mission figures reported by the Rega crews reflect the weather conditions, leisure activities and travel patterns of the Swiss population and foreign tourists. Last Saturday, for example, was by far the busiest working day in the period from December 30 to January 2 due to the fine weather. Rega coordinated over 90 rescue missions on this day.
Away from the mountain regions, Rega was also deployed to help patients with acute illnesses, traffic accidents, accidents at work and transfers between hospitals, wrote Swiss Air-Rescue in the press release. Rega's three ambulance jets were also deployed in Spain, Turkey, Portugal, France and Egypt.
