The Federal Office of Sport is billing the umbrella organization of Swiss sport, Swiss Olympic, CHF 4.9 million for overpayments of Covid-19 relief funds. Checks had revealed that certain funds had not been used for their intended purpose. This amounts to one percent of all aid money.
The relevant cases in youth and professional football as well as in grassroots sport (2021 stabilization package) have now been investigated, as announced by the Federal Office of Sport (Baspo) on Thursday.
The federal government supported Swiss sport during the coronavirus pandemic with several differently designed aid packages and paid out a total of around CHF 500 million.
According to Baspo, there were overlaps in the payments to Swiss Football League clubs, which claimed both A-Fonds-Perdu contributions for professional operations and money from the stabilization package for grassroots sport to cover Covid damage. Around CHF 1.9 million was misappropriated in the process.
Finally, the allocation of funds to clubs and other sports organizations (excluding professional clubs) as part of the 2021 stabilization package was also examined. This resulted in an amount of almost CHF 3 million that did not correspond to the purpose of the stabilization package. Three individual cases remain open and have been rejected for re-examination.
