Ignacio Cassis’ Encounter with Lavrov Highlights Diplomatic Strains

Originally reported by Tass:

In a recent high-profile diplomatic exchange, Moscow has explicitly acknowledged the impact of Switzerland’s policies on its approach to bilateral relations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in a candid discussion with Swiss counterpart Ignacio Cassis, emphasized Russia’s perception of Switzerland’s alignment with Ukraine and departure from its traditional stance of neutrality.

During the conversations, which occurred on the sidelines of the UN Security Council debates focusing on the Palestinian territories, the Russian side articulated its concerns. “The Russian delegation provided forthright evaluations of Switzerland’s shift from its historically neutral policies, coupled with Bern’s unequivocal backing of the Kiev regime,” stated the Russian foreign ministry. This stance from Moscow comes as a direct response to Switzerland’s activities, including its role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2023-2024 term.

The meeting, which lasted just over an hour, was a tete-a-tete conversation between Lavrov and Cassis. Following the dialogue, Cassis declined to engage with Russian media, signalling a palpable tension in the diplomatic air.

This unfolding situation underscores a significant recalibration in Moscow’s diplomatic strategy towards Switzerland. The emphasis on Switzerland’s alleged departure from neutrality and its support for Ukraine marks a new phase in Russia’s foreign policy considerations.
