Former Lucerne National Councillor Paul Fäh is dead. Fäh, who was a member of the Grand Chamber from 1987 to 1991, died at the age of 87, his party, the FDP, announced on Thursday on the short message service X.

Paul Fäh was born in 1937 and began his political career in 1971 when he became a member of the Lucerne city parliament. He was a member until 1979 and again from 1983 to 1987. He was also a member of the cantonal parliament from 1975 to 1980. He chaired the cantonal party from 1984 to 1989.

In 1987, Fäh replaced the future Federal Councillor Kaspar Villiger in the National Council, who moved to the Council of States. Just four years later, he no longer stood for election. He justified this with personal reasons such as "ideas about quality of life, motivation problems, concentration on his professional duties and consideration for his health".

Fäh was a member of the "Napf Working Group", which advocated general compulsory service instead of compulsory military service at a time when there was no alternative civilian service. Professionally, Fäh was a member of the staff of the Security Department of the Canton of Lucerne for more than 20 years.
